Subject Information File relates to James Stapleton's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1919 and with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1919 and 31 March 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. James Stapleton claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917 and that he took part in the usual activities. States that in January 1919 he took part in the unsuccessful attack on Drombane RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) station. Applicant states that in June 1919 he was involved in the shooting of DI (District Inspector) Hunt and in February/March 1920 the shooting of police at Ragg. In March 1920 claimant says that he took part in attack on Doon Barracks. Says that in late 1919 an Active Service Unit (Flying Column) was formed and that he held the rank of Officer Commanding. States that he took part in ambush of British forces at Lackmore; Rearcross Barracks; Shevrie Barracks; shooting of DI Wilson in Templemore in August 1920; Upperchurch ambush; attacks on barracks at Kilcamman, Roskeen, Dovea and Borrisleigh. During the Truce period (12 July 1921 - 30 June 1922) Stapleton claims that he was involved in training camps and in Templemore Barracks. States that he procurred arms from National Forces in Templemore Barracks. Stapleton says that in the ninth period he acted as Intelligence Officer. Mentions that after the cease fire he had no further activity. James Leahy states that Stapleton's rank of Battalion Officer Commanding ceased in early June 1922 and that Thomas Russell was appointed Battalion Officer Commanding File contains: typed transcript of sworn evidence given by the claimant before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 (24 May 1935); reference from Dan Breen and E O'Reilly; handwritten membership numbers for 2 Tipperary Brigade on critical dates (1935); certified copy of death certificate; material relating to payment of balance of pension to widow; material relating to family partly closed.
