Subject Information File relates to James Roche’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the accidental death of his son Martin Roche on 12 October 1920 at St Kieran's, Saltmills, County Wexford while engaged in the manufacture of munitions. Four other members of the IRA killed in the same incident. Copy letter dated 25 April 1924 from Commandant James O'Hanrahan states "according to information...the explosion was caused by a lighted candle coming into contact with some of the material they were using...the affair was purely accidental". Reference made to Roche having made an application for compensation under the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee. Applicant received £15 from the White Cross Association. File contains: report from an Garda Síochána detailing James Roche’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; Military Service Registration Board references from John Whelan and Thomas O'Hanlon. James Roche made further unsuccessful application for an award.
