Also includes application from Margaret McCartney, mother of deceased, for an award. Applicant claims that McCartney volunteered for service with Active Service Unit (Flying Column), 3 Northern Division. Reference made to another brother, Charles McCartney, having being interned on the Argenta (HMS Argenta was used by British authorities as a prison ship). John McCartney was a former member of the British Army and in receipt of 16 shillings per week disablement pension for a gun shot wound to his hand.
