Subject Information File relates to Patrick Dinan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations including an ambush at Grange [8 December 1920] and serving at an armed outpost for attacks at Ballylanders and Kilmallock [dates not recorded]. Applicant claims he was arrested at a dance at Caherguillamore 26 December 1920 and sentenced to two months in jail for unlawful assembly. References claim he was badly beaten following arrest and temporarily lost his hair as a result. References and applicant also claim he took part in disruption of communications and training with his company. During the Truce period Dinan states he was in Castle Ivers Training Camp, Limerick and that he enlisted in the National Army from here. During the Civil War he served with 39 Battalion headquartered at Limerick before demobilisation, time expired 28 February 1924. File includes: material submitted by subject in support of his service pension application; handwritten notes [of evidence given by Dinan before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; material relating to subject's National Army and Defence Forces service record; original signed handwritten references from Nicholas O'Dwyer, William Purcell and Captain G. O'Dwyer; and material relating to subject's widow and surviving children - partly closed.
