Subject Information File relates to John Dee's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923. During the War of Independence applicant claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks including: a raid on Gubbins, Kilfrush [early 1920], as an armed scout at attack on Kilmallock [May 1920] and as a scout at ambushes at Drumkeen, Lackelly and Kildrum. Dee also claims to have served with East Limerick flying column [active service unit] in the area in 1921 when it was unsafe for him to return to his own home. His references list various ranks and units for him in the 1921 period. References and applicant also claim he took part in intelligence work, scouting activity, burning of various local RIC barracks, drilling and police work. During the Civil War Dee enlisted in the National Army at Knocklong and served with 18 Battalion headquartered at Kilrush until demobilisation, time expired, 15 April 1924. File includes: material submitted by subject in support of his service pension application; handwritten notes [of evidence given by Dee before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; material relating to subject's National Army and Defence Forces service record; original signed handwritten references from Sergeant P. Meehan, Commandant Daniel Allis, Thomas Walshe, John A. Smyth and Captain J. Keane; uncompleted reference from Colonel Liam Hayes; reference to subject's part time work with the Department of Posts and Telegraphs which impacted his rate of pension.
