File relates to John Maurice (Sean) MacCarthy's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces in the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for his mobilisation and activities at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising and his service generally in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917.
From 1917 to the end of the War of Independence John Maurice MacCarthy served as a Battalion Vice Officer Commanding, Battalion Office Commanding, Brigade Adjutant and Active Service Unit (Flying Column) Adjutant with the Irish Volunteers and IRA. During that period as well as being involved in organisational, training and intelligence work he also took part in a number of IRA operations and attacks against British forces and targets. These included: the Knocklong train ambush; attacks on Ballylanders and Killmallock [RIC] barracks; and ambushes at Glenacurrane and Dromkeen - exact dates of these operations not on file. During the Truce period he served as Adjutant in IRA Brigade training camps, served on the staff of the newly formed 4 Southern Division and was involved in organisational work in the West Limerick area. MacCarthy transferred from the IRA to the National Army on the latter's foundation and served throughout the subsequent Civil War. John Maurice MacCarthy continued to serve with the Defence Forces until retiring at the rank of Colonel during the 1950s - exact date not on file.
