Subject Information File relates to Thomas Starr’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of his son Patrick Starr who was killed on 1 May 1921. Bridget Starr, mother of deceased, also made an unsuccessful application for an award following the death of Thomas Starr. Claimed in file that Starr was among a party of IRA who were engaged with British forces at Shraherloe/Shraherlow/Shraherla or Daragh, County Cork. Applicant claims that an individual named Horan was killed in the engagement and another named Hennessy died a number of days later in Fermoy Military Hospital. Patrick Casey captured and executed the following day. Thomas Starr was awarded a gratuity of £50 under the Army Pensions Act, 1923. The award was never paid. Starr made a further application under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 and was again made an award totalling £100. File contains: two reports from an Garda Síochána detailing Thomas Starr’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; certified copy of death certificate for Patrick Starr; copy extract from the baptismal register for the baptism of Thomas Starr; Military Service Registration Board references from Sean Gaynor and Frank McGrath.
