Subject Information |
File relates to Mary McNamara's successful pension application in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan for entire and parts of periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921. She was awarded 1 and 1/3 years of service for pension purposes in 1942.
Applicant states that she joined Cumann na mBan in 1919 and her pre-Truce activities included first aid care for Volunteers (she names Martin McNamara) (1921), weekly dispatch carrying for the column, catering for column men prior to ambushes (Glenwood, Scariff).
Subject refers to a Constable Murray, a 'Black and Tan' from Cork, who was based in Broadford Barracks. In the period after the Glenwood ambush [January 1921], he would carry dispatches on foot from Broadford to Sixmilebridge "dressed like one of the Flying Column ... (with) leggings, and breeches and coat and hat"'. He used to enquiry localy about the activites of the IRA. Mary McNamara claims that she informed the IRA about this suspected spy and took part in the arrest of Constable Murphy on 12 March 1921 who was taken away and shot dead.
File contains material relating to the applicant's claim for a service pension; reference letters by Mrs Murphy (nee Clancy), Austin Brennan, Michael [O'Daly], Patrick McGrath, JJ McNamara, John Curley, Tomás MacCraith; typed summary and typed sworn statement made by applicant before Advisory Committee on 20 June 1940.
