Subject Information File relates to James Ronayne’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of his son Patrick Ronayne who was executed at Victoria (Collins) Barracks, Cork on 28 April 1921. Also includes unsuccessful application from John and Jeremiah Ronayne, brothers of deceased, for an award. Letter dated 18 February 1924 states that an ambush was planned at Mourne Abbey. Information regarding the proposed ambush was passed to British forces who surrounded the IRA position and Ronayne was arrested. James Ronayne made an unsuccessful application under the Criminal Injuries (Ireland) Acts for £6,000 compensation. Deceased was charged with levying war, tried by military court and sentenced. A writ was issued in Chancery Division but before case could come up to hearing military at 6 Division Headquarters Cork executed deceased. File contains: report from an Garda Síochána detailing James Ronayne’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death.
