Subject Information File relates to John and Ellen Looney’s unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of their son Michael Looney who was wounded at Mourne Abbey, Mallow, County Cork on 15 February 1921 in an engagement with British forces. Looney died from his wounds in Cork Military Hospital on 22 February 1921. Letter dated 18 February 1924 states that an ambush was planned at Mourne Abbey. Information regarding the proposed ambush was passed to British forces who surrounded the IRA position. Looney was wounded and taken prisoner. Military Service Registration Board issued a service certificate awarding Looney service from 1916 to February 1921. John Looney made an unsuccessful application under the Criminal Injuries (Ireland) Acts for £6,000 compensation.
