Subject Information File relates to Patrick O'Brien's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1919. During the War of Independence Patrick O'Brien served as an IRA Vice Battalion Officer Commanding, Brigade Quartermaster and Brigade Officer Commanding. During that conflict as well as being engaged in organisational work he states that he took part in IRA attacks on Killmallock RIC Barracks, Mallow Military Barracks and on RIC and British forces in counties Cork and Limerick at [Ballydrickane], Clonbanin, Aughrim, Tullyduff, Rathcoole, Abbeyfeale and Barna. During the Truce period, as well as participating in IRA training camps O'Brien was involved in the taking over of a number of military and police posts and barracks. During the Civil War Patrick O'Brien served as an IRA Deputy Divisional Commanding Officer and took part in fighting against National Army forces in counties [Cork] and Limerick. He evaded arrest/capture during this conflict.
