Subject Information File relates to Denis Bolton’s receipt of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £40 (forty pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of his son Civic Guard Thomas Bolton. File also relates to Mary Bolton’s receipt of a dependents’ allowance under the Army Pensions Act in respect of her brother Thomas Bolton and refers to a claim by James Bolton in respect of his brother Thomas Bolton. Thomas Bolton died on 18 September 1922 at Rathangan Barracks, County Kildare from the effect of an accidental self inflicted gun shot wound received that same day. Thomas Bolton was serving as a member of the armed Active Service Unit of the Garda Siochana under the control of the Minister of Defence at the time of his death. Prior to joining the Garda Siochana Thomas Bolton had served with the IRA during the War of Independence. File includes: [original] signed handwritten letter of condolence dated 26 September 1922 from Commandant Liam Staic, The Barracks, Kildare addressed to “Dear Mr. Bolton” regarding the death of his son; signed typed letter of 23 November 1923 from W. Doolin, Ministry of Finance to Major General G. O’Sullivan, Adjutant General regarding the death of Thomas Bolton, the question of whether an award to his relatives/dependents’ could be granted under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in the light of Bolton’s service with the Active Service Unit of the Civic Guards under the control of the Minister for Defence at the time of his death, querying whether any element of carelessness on Bolton’s part was involved in his death and recommending that a memorandum on the various types of lethal weapons in use by the Army be prepared for the guidance of the Army Pensions Board, and enclosing typed undated unsigned document entitled “Death of Guard Thomas Bolton – Summary of facts deposed to at Inquest”; typed copy letter of 10 December 1923 from the Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Minister for Finance regarding safety instructions issued and training given with respect to firearms and lethal weaponry, the lethal weapons most commonly used by the army the safety catches, if any, on these weapons, and the question of standardising weapons used by the Army; signed typed letter of 12 December 1923 from [R. P. Cleary] for the Minister of Defence to Denis Bolton informing him that he has forwarded his claim for compensation in respect of his son to the Minister of Home Affairs as Thomas Bolton was serving with the Civic Guards at the time of his death; signed typed standard report dated 19 March 1924 from the Office of the Adjutant General to the Ministry of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of the death of Civic Guard Thomas Bolton and enclosing signed typed report of 15 March 1924 from [E.
