File relates to Vincent Calleary’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the various service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920.
Vincent Calleary claims membership of Na Fianna Éireann from February 1917. He states that he transferred to the Irish Volunteers during 1919. During the War of Independence subject claims to have taken part in a number of IRA operations and attacks in counties Mayo and Sligo including: the burning of Cloghans RIC barracks in [April] 1920; various raids on Ballina Railway Station; attack on an RIC patrol in Ballina on 21 July 1920 in which RIC Sergeant Armstrong was killed; attack on Enniscrone Coastguard Station in [August] 1920; exchange of fire during British forces capture of IRA arms dump in Ballina in January 1921; attack on two Black and Tans (RIC) in Ballina in April 1921; attack on RIC at Bonniconlon, County Mayo in April 1921; attack on Easkey Courthouse and RIC station – date not on file; and fighting against RIC and British forces at Cullens in [June] 1921; as well as various raids for arms. Calleary also states that he was arrested and briefly detained by British forces in January 1921.
Vincent Calleary was appointed Divisional Director of Communications, 4 Western Division IRA on the formation of that division during the Truce period. During the Civil War Calleary took part in fighting against National Army forces at Ballina, Drumsheen, Rehins and Castleconnor. He also states that he took part in IRA bank raids in Castlebar and Ballina. Vincent Calleary evaded arrest and states that he remained on the run for some months after the ceasefire in April 1923.
