Subject Information |
File relates to Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin’s (Donnchadh Hannigan) receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the period between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917.
Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from prior to 1916. He states that he mobilised for the 1916 Rising but had no active service as instructions failed to reach him. Following the surrender he states that as well as taking part in the reorganisation of the Irish Volunteers in his area, he also assisted members of the Irish Volunteers evading arrest and attempting to leave the country including his brother Donal O’Hannigan and Michael O’Callaghan. During 1917 he states that he served as an Irish Volunteer Battalion Officer Commanding but according to reference from Nicholas O’Dwyer he returned to the ranks during [1918] following an inquiry by Irish Volunteer General Headquarters into an unspecified incident/dispute in the area.
According to references on file, during the War of Independence Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin took part in and/or led a number of IRA attacks and operations including incidents at Ballylanders, Killmallock, Lackelly, Ballyahill, [Glenagrane], [Shraherla] and Dromkeen – exact dates not on file. He claims that he was responsible for the formation in May 1920 of the East Limerick Brigade Active Service Unit (Flying Column) which he commanded. He also states that he succeeded Sean Wall as Brigade Officer Commanding East Limerick Brigade IRA in [April] 1921.
Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin transferred to the National Army on its formation and became the Officer Commanding 4 Southern Division following its formation in March 1922. He served in this post during the Civil War until leaving the Defence Forces on 31 March 1923 to take up a position as assistant Lands Officer in the Department of Defence.
File includes: material signed and submitted by Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin in support of his application; material relating to subject’s National Army and Defence Forces service record; signed handwritten statements regarding claimant’s service from Captain G. Scanlon, Diarmuid Ó hÉigceartuigh, Nicholas O’Dwyer and Captain J. McCarthy; undated unsigned handwritten notes in Irish relating to [evidence given by Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; material relating and referring to subject’s receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal with Bar and his unsuccessful application for a 1916 Medal; material referring to claimant’s ongoing civilian position as a civil servant until 28 February 1962; material relating to the settlement and closure of Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin’s service pension account following his death; and material relating and referring to Donnchadh Ó hAnnagáin’s widow and surviving children – partly closed for reasons of data protection.
