Subject Information File relates to Joseph Stanford's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the various periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917. Applicant was awarded 5 and 7/8 years of service for pension purposes in August 1937. Applicant claims for Easter week but had no fighting. Applicant was involved in police duty in 1918 (courts, organising and enrolling of Volunteers) and in the manufacture of munitions. States that he took part in the ambush of British officers at Ballyturin, County Galway [15 May 1921]. Claims rank of Company Captain. He joined the A.S.U. in 1920. Fought in 1922 at Loughcutra, Gort, Kilmacduagh and Clarenbridge. Applicant was arrested on 24 November 1922 and was released on 28 May 1924. File contains material relating to the pension application and the award of pension (general correspondence, application form filled in and dated 26 February 1935); life certificate dated November 1937; application for a widow allowance filled in by Stanford's wife following his death (date of marriage; 28 June 1933; Mary Ann Stanford died on 19 January 1978.
