File relates to Mary Dolan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £75 - increased from £25 on appeal - under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her son National Army Private 986 James Dolan. File also relates to Katie Dolan's receipt of a dependents' allowance under the Army Pensions Act, 1953 in respect of her brother Private James Dolan.
Private James Dolan died on 16 September 1922 at Leitrim County Infirmary from the effect of gunshot wound he received on the night of 14 September / morning of 15 September during an attack on Drumshambo Barracks by 'Irregulars' (IRA) during the Civil War. Prior to joining the National Army James Dolan had served as an IRA Company Captain during the War of Independence.
File includes: material signed and submitted by Mary and Katie Dolan in support of their respective applications and appeals; signed typed standard report of 23 February 1924 from Defence Forces Adjutant General Gearóid O'Suilleavain to the Ministry of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private James Dolan's death and enclosing typed copy report of 15 February 1924 from Captain H.
