Subject Information |
File relates to James McGrath's application for a dependant's allowance or gratuity, under the Army Pensions Act 1923, in respect of his son, Matthew McGrath, who was accidentally shot and killed 23 September 1922 at Listowel, County Kerry.
Subject's mother, Margaret McGrath claims that her son: 'joined up since the first of the struggles with the Black and Tans' and continued serving until the Truce period. An article from a local newspaper states that McGrath joined a column (Active Service Unit) in September 1920 and that he was on active service everyday until the signing of the truce. The article also states that on one occasion, at Tulla, McGrath was fired on by a British patrol and that on returning fire, he killed an officer.
File also includes material relating to an unsuccessful application, from Margaret McGrath, for an allowance or gratuity under the Army Pensions Act 1932.
File includes: application form and material submitted by James McGrath in support of his application; Adjutant General's report confirming the circumstances surrounding Mathew McGrath's death; Garda Síochána report detailing James McGrath's circumstances and his level of dependence on his son at the time of his death; typed copy of a newspaper article regarding the service and activities of Matthew McGrath; extract of baptismal register for Margaret McGrath (nee McMahon).
