Subject Information File relates to Owen Sherlock's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £50 (fifty pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of his son National Army Private 21027 Owen Sherlock. Private Owen Sherlock died after being shot at Mounthamilton, Dundalk, County Louth on 23 September 1922 during the Civil War. According to information on the file Owen Sherlock joined the National Army in March 1922 and had been interned at Ballykinlar Internment Camp by the British authorities for 11 months in 1921 during the War of Independence. File includes: material submitted and signed by Owen Sherlock (senior) and by John J. Keenan, Solicitor, Monaghan in support of claimant's application; signed standard report of 18 January 1924 from the office of the Defence Forces Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private Owen Sherlock's death; Garda Síochána report of 21 February 1924 regarding the circumstances and means of the Sherlock family and the degree of dependency of Owen Sherlock on his son at the time of the latter's death; and material relating to claimant's unsuccessful application for a further award under the Army Pensions Act, 1932.
