Subject Information File relates to Patrick McDonnell's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1918. Patrick McDonnell claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from 1915 but had no active service during the 1916 Easter Rising. He states that during 1918 he took part in election work in Waterford. From March 1919 he served as a Company Officer Commanding and in October 1920 was appointed an IRA Battalion O. C. During the War of Independence McDonnell took part in a number of IRA attacks and operations including: an attack on Borrisokane RIC Barracks (June 1920); the shooting of unnamed members of the RIC (October 1920, January 1921 and February 1921); an attack on British forces - exact location not on file (May 1921); as well a number of unsuccessful or aborted operations. McDonnell states that his family home was burned by [British forces] in February 1921. During the Truce period he took part in a number of IRA training camps and in March 1922 became a Brigade Officer Commanding. In June 1922 he took part in an operation which successfully seized arms and ammunition from Kildare Civic Guard (Garda Siochana) Depot and removed the material to the Four Courts garrison in Dublin. Following the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 Patrick McDonnell took part in the fighting against National Army forces in County Tipperary and took part in and/or planned the IRA take over of Nenagh on 30 June, an attack on National Army forces at Bushfield, capturing of an National Army officer Ignatius O'Neill, blowing up of lorry carrying National Army troops at Ballywilliam - all August 1922. In September 1922 he took part in an IRA attack on National Army forces at Boher, County Tipperary. He states that he was arrested three days after this attack and subsequently interned until 28 May 1924 at Tintown No.2 Internment Camp, Maryboro (Portlaoise) Jail and Mountjoy Prison. He claims that during this period of internment he took part in a 35 day hunger strike and that he resigned from the IRA in 1925. Quinlan, late O/C, 7th Bn. Tipp. No. 1 Bde" to the Secretary, Military Service Pensions Board stating that "McDonald" (sic) held the position of Officer Commanding 1 Tipperary Brigade on 1 July 1922; standard form Referee R.15 dated 11 February 1936 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from records supplied by 1 Tipperary Brigade IRA committee; handwritten letter of 15 May 1937 from "S. O'C." Castle Connell, County Limerick to the Secretary, Military Pensions Board regarding the service pension application of a Patrick McDonnell , Grillagh, Nenagh, [County Tipperary] and to the writer's brother Edward; material referring to an unsuccessful claim by Patrick McDonnell under the Damage to Property (Compensation) (Amendment) Ac, 1933, the resulting award of costs against him and the recoupment of those costs from his military service pension; and material relating to Patrick McDonnell's surviving sister.
