File relates to Patrick Rawl's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £30 (thirty pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of his son National Army Private Thomas Rawl. File also relates to James Rawl's receipt of a dependents' allowance under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his brother Thomas Rawl and an unsuccessful application from Michael Rawl, also a brother of Thomas Rawl.
Private Patrick Rawl died on 16 September 1922 at Ballina Hospital, Ballina County Mayo from the effects of wounds received by him at Glenamoy, County Mayo on that or the previous day in fighting against IRA ('Irregular') forces during the Civil War. Patrick Rawl was one of six members of the National Army killed as a result of this engagement - see also 2D71 Sean Higgins, 2D353 Patrick Bray, 2D62 William Joseph Gill, 2D238 Thomas Joseph Healy and 2D36 Edward Crabbe. Patrick Rawl had served with the IRA during the War of Independence prior to joining the National Army.
File includes: material submitted and signed by Patrick, Michael and James Rawl in support of their various applications; signed standard report of 21 January 1924 from the office of the Defence Forces Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private Thomas Rawl's death; Garda Síochána and local area social welfare officer investigations into the circumstances and means of the Rawl family and the degree of dependency of the various applicants on Thomas Rawl at the time of the latter's death; medical reports regarding James Rawl in respect of his claim to be incapable of self support by reason of permanent infirmity in connection with his application under the Army Pensions Acts; signed handwritten statements regarding Thomas Rawl's pre-truce IRA service from Terence Mitchell, Patrick Doherty, Harry McKeown and Eugene Kilkenny; and material relating to the settlement and closure of James Rawl's dependents' allowance account following his death in [1977] - exact date of death not on file.
