Subject Information File relates to Mary O'Shea's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £75 (seventy five pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her son National Army Private 13730 Cornelius O'Shea. File also relates to unsuccessful applications and appeals by Mary O'Shea for further / increased award under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son. Private Cornelius O'Shea died in the Kerry county Infirmary of 30 September 1922 from the effects of a gunshot wound he received at The Basin, Tralee, County Kerry on 28 September 1922 during the Civil War. Jeremiah O'Shea, brother of Cornelius O'Shea, in a letter dated 15 September 1933 states that Private O'Shea was shot by a National Army officer named Horan. According to material on file Cornelius O'Shea had served with the British Army prior to joining the National Army in [August] 1922. File includes: material submitted and signed by Mary O'Shea in support of her application and subsequent appeals; signed standard report of 21 January 1924 from the office of the Defence Forces Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Cornelius O'Shea's death; material relating to Garda Síochána investigations into the circumstances and means of the O'Shea family and the degree of dependency of Mary O'Shea on her son at the time of his death.
