File relates to unsuccessful applications by Jane and Mary Anne O'Dea under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of their son and brother National Army Captain Patrick O'Dea. Applicants were found not to have been dependent on Patrick O'Dea.
Captain Patrick O'Dea died on 5 August 1922 in Kilrush Hospital, County Clare from injuries received in a motor accident on 2 August on the road between Cooraclare and Kilrush during the Civil War. Immediately prior to the motor accident O'Dea and the part of National Army soldiers he was travelling with had escaped from an attack by a force of 'Irregulars' (IRA) near Cooraclare. Prior to joining the National Army Patrick O'Dea had served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA during the War of Independence as a Company Officer Commanding and had been interned by the British authorities for a period up to December 1921.
File includes: material submitted and signed by Jane and Mary Anne O'Dea in support of their respective applications and appeals; handwritten [copy] letters dated 26 October and 7 December 1921 from Patrick O'Dea addressed to "Dear Jane" and written from 8A Field Prison, Spike Island and No. 39C Internment Camp, Maryborough, Leix respectively; signed typed standard report dated 23 January 1924 from Defence Forces Adjutant General Lieutenant General Gearóid O'Suilleavain to the Ministry of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Patrick O'Dea's death and enclosing typed report of 18 January 1924 from the Office of the General Officer Commanding, Limerick Command to the Defence Forces Adjutant General regarding the date and circumstances of Patrick O'Dea's injury and death and the degree of dependency of O'Dea's mother on him; material relating to Garda Síochána and local area social welfare officer investigations into the circumstances and means of the O'Dea family and the degree of their dependency on Patrick O'Dea at the time of his death; signed handwritten statements verifying Patrick O'Dea's IRA service from Sean Liddy and William Haugh; and [misfiled] handwritten letter dated 4 July 1923 from Ben Donohoe, Derrycassin, Ballyconnell, County Cavan stamped Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee and noted as 577/58 and forwarded to Army Finance Officer on 14 November 1923.
