Subject Information File relates to Michael O’Connor’s receipt of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £150 (one hundred and fifty pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of his sons Brigadier Thomas O’Connor and Captain John O’Connor, both of the National Army. Thomas and John O’Connor were both shot dead on 9 September 1922 in their family home in Kenmare, County Kerry during the ‘Irregular’ (IRA) operation to capture the town from National Army forces during the Civil War. Thomas O’Connor had been serving as the Officer in charge of the National Army post at Kenmare at the time of his death. Prior to serving with the National Army both brothers had served with the IRA during the War of Independence. File includes: material submitted and signed by Michael O’Connor, John T. Guihan, Solicitor and T. G. O’Sullivan, Solicitor in support of Michael O’Connor’s application under the Army Pensions Act, 1923; signed typed standard report of 16 January 1924 from Defence Forces Adjutant General, Lieutenant General Gearóid O’Suilleavain to the Ministry of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of the deaths of Thomas and John O’Connor; material relating to the Garda Síochána investigation into the circumstances and means of the O’Connor family and the degree of dependency of Michael O’Connor on his sons at the time of their deaths; signed typed report of 12 January 1924 from W. R. E. Murphy, Chief Commissioner, Dublin Metropolitan Police, and Adjutant South West Command National Army at the time of the O’Connor brothers’ death, to the Adjutant General regarding the circumstances surrounding the killing of Thomas and John O’Connor and the capture of Kenmare by ‘Irregular’ forces; material relating to the O’Connor family’s application for payment in respect of arrears of pay due to Thomas and John O’Connor and for monies advanced by the O’Connor family to pay National Army forces in Kenmare; material relating to representations from Fionán Lynch TD, Minister for Fisheries and Professor O’Sullivan TD on behalf of the O’Connor family; and material relating to a nephew of John and Thomas O’Connor – closed.
