Subject Information File relates to Mary McCabe's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £75 (seventy five pounds sterling) - increased on appeal from £40 - under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her brother National Army Sergeant 6256 Patrick McCabe. Mary McCabe also submitted an application in respect of her brother under the Army Pensions Act, 1953 but died before the completion of its processing. Sergeant Patrick McCabe was killed by machine gun fire during an attack on Carrickmacross National Army Barracks on 5 September 1922 during the Civil War. Patrick McCabe had served with the IRA prior to joining the National Army in August 1922. File includes: material signed and submitted by John Gillespie, solicitor, Castleblayney, County Monaghan, on behalf of his client Mary McCabe; material relating to Mary McCabe's receipt of a dependents' allowance from Army funds prior to her receipt of an award under the Army Pensions Act; signed standard report of 6 February 1924 from the Defence Forces Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Sergeant Patrick McCabe; material relating to Garda Síochána investigations into the circumstances and means of the McCabe family and the degree of dependency of Mary McCabe on her brother at the time of his death; and material relating to Mary McCabe's application under the Army Pensions Act, 1953.
