File relates to Rose McBreen's receipt of a dependents' allowance under the Army Pensions Acts in 1964 in respect of her husband National Army Private 52480 Patrick McBreen.
Private Patrick McBreen died from wounds received / injuries incurred from a grenade explosion during an attack on the National Army foot patrol of which he was a member by 'Irregulars' (IRA) in Dundalk, County Louth on 15 September 1922 during the Civil War. Patrick McBreen served with the Irish Volunteers and IRA prior to joining the National Army on 1 April 1922.
File (2D389) relates to Mary McBreen’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of her son Patrick McBreen.
File includes: signed typed report dated 2 February 1923 from National Army Dublin Command Headquarters to the Adjutant General regarding the date and circumstances of Private Patrick McBreen's death; report from an Garda Síochána detailing Mary McBreen’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; material relating to Rose McBreen's unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Act, 1923; signed handwritten statements and letters regarding the verification of Patrick McBreen's pre-Truce IRA service from Patrick Sheils, Patrick Smith TD, Michael Lynch, Joseph Lynch, Bernard O'Reilly and Philip Carolan; and material relating to the settlement and closure of Rose McBreen's dependents' allowance account following her death on 14 April 1973 - partly closed.
