Subject Information File relates to Mary Kearns's receipt of a dependents' allowance under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 for herself and her children in respect of her husband National Army Private Richard Kearns. Private Richard Kearns died on 5 September 1922 from wounds received by him on 1 September 1922 in an ambush by 'Irregulars' (IRA) during the Civil War. Private Richard Kearns joined the National Army in early August 1922. His wife later claimed while applying under the 1953 Act, that Kearns drove Michael Collins' car back from Beal na Blath to Cork following Collins' death - unclear from file if Kearns was present during the incident which led to Collins' death. According to information on the file Richard Kearns had also served with the British Army for some time up to 31 March 1919. File includes: material relating to the payment of dependents' allowance to Mary Kearns from Army funds prior to her receipt of payment under the Army Pensions Act; signed typed report dated 11 December 1923 from the Defence Forces Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private Richard Kearns' death; signed typed report of 11 January 1924 from [E. Ó Cugáin], Leas Coinisineir, Garda Síochána to the Secretary, Ministry of Defence regarding the circumstances and means of the Kearns' family and the degree of dependency of Mary Kearns on her husband at the time of his death; material relating to the reimbursement of school fees in respect of the son of Mary and Richard Kearns by the Department of Defence; material relating to Mary Kearns' unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Act, 1953 for a further/increased award; and material relating to the closure and settlement of Mary Kearns' dependents' allowance account following her death on 19 February 1973.
