Subject Information File relates to unsuccessful applications under the Army Pensions Acts from Delia and Michael J. Holohan in respect of their son Brendan M. Holohan of the IRA. The body of Brendan M. Holohan, killed during the Civil War, was found at Red Cow near Clondalkin, County Dublin on 7 October 1922 with a number of bullet wounds having been arrested by National Army forces on the night of 6 October. According to material on file a verdict of wilful murder against persons unknown was returned by the jury at his subsequent inquest. Eamonn Patrick Hughes DP559 and Joseph Rogers were also allegedly killed in the same incident. Brendan Holohan is certified as having been a member of the IRA from April 1922. Thomas Burke (MSP34REF3868), ex Officer Commanding 2 Battalion, 1 Dublin Brigade, IRA states that Holohan was on active IRA service as part of an intelligence patrol at the time of his arrest. Archivist's Note: He was a member of K Company, 2 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, IRA at the time of his death according to the nominal rolls see MA-MSPC-RO-3, page 168. File includes: signed handwritten statements from Thomas Burke (MSP34REF3868) and Mrs Judy O'Reilly (née Gaughran) (MSP34REF21480) verifying Brendan Holohan's IRA membership and service; material relating to local area officer customs and excise and social welfare investigations into the circumstances and means of the Holohan family and the degree of dependency of Delia and Michael Holohan on Brendan Holohan at the time of the latter's death; material signed and submitted by Delia and Michael Holohan and their son Eamonn J. Holohan in support of the various applications.
