Subject Information File relates to Anne Julia Hughes's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £112-10-00 (one hundred and twelve pounds and ten shillings sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in respect of her son Eamonn Patrick Hughes of the IRA. The body of Eamonn Patrick Hughes, killed during the Civil War, was found at Red Cow near Clondalkin, County Dublin on 7 October 1922 with a number of bullet wounds. On the night of 6 October 1922 he was seen being put into a car by a number of men in National Army uniforms. According to material on file a verdict of wilful murder against persons unknown was returned by the jury at his subsequent inquest. Brendan Holohan and Joseph Rogers were also allegedly killed in the same incident. Eamonn Hughes had served with Fianna Éireann prior to transferring to the IRA during the War of Independence in May 1921. He was a member of K Company, 2 Battalion, Dublin Brigade, IRA at the time of his death. File includes: signed handwritten letters and statements regarding Eamonn Hughes' IRA service and the circumstances surrounding his death from Frank Henderson (MSP34REF230) and Michael Murphy (MSP34REF67); material signed and submitted by G. W. J. Hughes (brother of Eamonn Hughes and also ex-member of the IRA) in support of his mother's application; unidentified and undated newspaper cuttings regarding the ninth anniversary of the death of Brendan Holohan, Joe Rogers and Edwin Hughes on 7 October 1922; material relating to Garda Síochána investigation into the circumstances and means of the Hughes family and the degree of dependency of Anne Julia Hughes on her son at the time of his death; reference to an unsuccessful claim brought by Mark J. Hughes, father of Eamonn Hughes, before the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee in 1923; and material relating to the posthumous award of a Service (1917-1921) Medal for Eamonn Hughes.
