File relates to Mary Ellen Joyce's receipt of a dependents' allowance under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her husband National Army Private 34204 William Joyce. This allowance was also paid in respect of Mary Ellen and William Joyce's two children.
Private William Joyce was killed at Kilmilken, County Galway on 2 December 1922 during the Civil War. His widow claims that prior to joining the National Army that William Joyce, a native of County Galway, had been involved in Irish nationalist activity in the North East of England where he lived and worked.
File includes: handwritten material signed and submitted by Mary Ellen Joyce in support of her application; material relating and referring to Mary Ellen Joyce's receipt of a dependents' allowance from Army funds prior to the award of an allowance under the Army Pensions Act; original signed typed reports of 8 June 1923 and 5 May 1924 from the Defence forces Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Department of Defence and the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private William Joyce's death; representations on behalf of Mary Ellen Joyce from Sean Milroy TD and P. O'Maille TD; signed typed reports dated 3 May and 13 May 1924 from the Superintendent, Police Office, Wallsend on Tyne, England regarding the circumstances and means of the Joyce family and the degree of dependency of Mary Ellen Joyce on her husband at the time of his death; signed typed report of 26 January 1925 from the Police Office, Wallsend regarding Mary Ellen Joyce's non receipt of payment of her allowance from November 1924; and material relating to the closing of Mary Ellen Joyce's dependents' allowance account and her receipt of a remarriage gratuity following her remarriage on 17 September 1927.
