Subject Information File relates to Patrick F May's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. May states that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914. In the fourth period May claims that he was involved in organising and training volunteers. During the War of Independence subject states that he was involved in ambushes at Partry, Tourmakeady, Tournamode and attempted ambushes at Shrule, Hollymount and Creagh. During the Truce period May states that he was in charge of Cavalry Barracks and that he was sent to Limerick, Galway and Roscommon. Letter from South Mayo Brigade Pensions Committee dated 10 May 1937 states that applicant was appointed Vice Brigadier on 7 July 1922. Following the outbreak of the Civil War May says that he took part in engagements with National Forces at Mounttalbot, Mountbellew, Ballinlough, Ballinrobe and Kilkeeran. Subject says that he was arrested on 4 August 1922 at Kilkeeran and interned until December 1923.
