Subject Information |
File relates to Austin Brennan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces in the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 April 1917.
File also relates to Austin Brennan's applications for and receipt of payments under the Army Pensions Acts.
Austin Brennan claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from its formation and membership of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) from 1916. He states that he mobilised with the Meelick Company, Irish Volunteers during the 1916 Easter Rising, marched to Bunratty, County Clare and 'stood to' for the remainder of the week. He claims that following the surrender he ensured the dumping of his company's arms in defiance of what he claims were orders from the Brigade leadership based in Limerick to surrender all arms to the British forces.
He was involved in the reorganisation of the Irish Volunteers from 1916 and claims to have represented County Clare at that organisation's convention in Dublin at Easter 1917. Arrested and sentenced to two years imprisonment by a British Military Court-martial in [July] 1917 Austin Brennan was imprisoned until [early 1918] at Cork, Mountjoy and Dundalk prisons where he took part in a number of hunger strikes and was also forcibly fed on a number of occasions. From 1919 he was involved in training and organisational work and following the formation of the East Clare Brigade he became its Commanding Officer and also served with his area's Flying Column (Active Service Unit). As such he was involved in the planning, preparation and execution of all IRA operations and attacks within his Brigade area. Claimant and references refer to attacks at Scariff, Cratloe and Glenwood - exact dates and details regarding these incidents not on file.
Austin Brennan joined the National Army in March 1922 and served throughout the subsequent Civil War. He retired to the Defence Forces Reserve of Officers at the rank of Colonel from 16 February 1929 and finally resigned with effect from 28 March 1933.
