Subject Information |
File relates to Stephen Donnelly's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces for part or all of the various service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
Stephen Donnelly claims membership of Fianna Éireann from 1917. Arrested in [September] 1919 he was imprisoned until [January] 1920, taking part in a prison protest in Belfast Jail under the leadership of Austin Stack. Following his release Stephen Donnelly took part in an IRA raid on the Income Tax office in Ballina, County Mayo as well as raids for arms and Belfast goods as well as raids for police and military goods. During 1920 Donnelly also took part in IRA attacks on an RIC patrol in Knox Street, Ballina in which an RIC Sergeant Armstrong was killed (July) and Enniscrone Coastguard Station, County Sligo (date not on file). In [November] 1920 he was appointed IRA Company Officer Commanding and in January 1921 he was one of a party of IRA attacked by RIC/British forces while moving arms from an arms dump.
In April 1921 he took part in an attack on two 'Black and Tans' (RIC) in Ballina and in May was involved in the attempted killing of RIC District Inspector White - the following morning he escaped attempted capture by British forces during which another IRA member Thomas Howley was shot and killed. During 1921 he was also involved in IRA attacks on British forces at Bonniconlon, and Clydagh, Ballycastle (County Mayo) as well as Easkey RIC Barracks, County Sligo.
During the Truce period Stephen Donnelly took part in IRA training camps and joined the National Army in April 1922. Stephen Donnelly continued to serve with the National Army throughout the Civil War. However it is claimed that he provided information and intelligence to the IRA regarding National Army movements and activities as well as carrying messages to IRA prisoners interned at Tintown (Curragh, County Kildare) and helping in the escape of IRA prisoners from there. In November 1923 Stephen Donnelly was dismissed from the National Forces having been found in possession of letters addressed to prisoners while he was serving as a Line Officer at Tintown "B" Internment Camp, the Curragh, County Kildare.
