Subject Information File relates to the receipt by Eliza Hannan of a partial dependents' gratuity of £50 (fifty pounds sterling) in respect of her son National Army Private Daniel Hannan. There are two applications in respect of this individual in the collection. 2D68 and 2D425. These files refer to Daniel Hannan and Daniel Hanna respectively and reference is made on both files to their status as duplicates of each other while payment in relation to both files is made to Eliza Hannan on file F341. Private Daniel Hannan was killed during the Civil War in September 1922 when the National Army party of which he was a member was ambushed by 'Irregulars' (IRA) at Brennan's Glen, County Kerry while travelling between Farranfore and Killarney. Dates given for the subject's death vary from 'on or about 24 September 1922' to 27 September 1922. According to Society of St. Vincent de Paul report on file 2D68 in respect of Daniel Hannan, subject had also been shot on an unspecified date during "...the Belfast troubles..." and that a claim for compensation in relation to this against the Government of Northern Ireland had not been successful. File includes: material relating to Eliza Hannan's receipt of a dependents' allowance payable from 7 July 1922 to 31 March 1924 from Army funds; typed signed reports dates 2 January and 27 August 1924 from the Defence Forces Office of the Adjutant General to the Department of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of the death of Private Daniel Hannan and Private Daniel Hanna; signed typed report of 22 August 1924 from Major Domnaill MacCionaith, Adjutant, Southern Command to the Adjutant General regarding the date and circumstances surrounding the death of Private Daniel Hanna; material relating to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul investigations into the circumstances and means of the Hanna / Hannan family and the degree of dependency of Eliza Hannan on her son at the time of his death.
