Subject Information File relates to Kate Foran's receipt of a dependents' gratuity under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling), increased from £50 on appeal, in respect of her son National Army Private 1816 John Foran. Kate Foran also attempted unsuccessfully to apply under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 with respect to her son. Private John Foran died on 25 December 1922 from the effect of wounds received by him on 22 July of that year at Mountjoy Prison during the Civil War. According to the official evidence on file Private Foran was shot accidentally while on duty in the prison. However, in a letter of 27 February 1933 addressed to Frank Aiken TD, Minister for Defence, Kate Foran claims that he was shot because he was carrying messages to the prisoners there. File includes: typed copy of report dated 28 December 1922 from the Chief State Solicitor's Department to the Minister of Home Affairs, on the inquest on the body of Private John Foran held at the Mater Hospital, Dublin on 27 December 1922; handwritten statements and letters signed and submitted by Kate Foran in support of her application; signed standard report of 11 December 1923 from the Defence Forces Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private John Foran's wounding and death; material relating to the Garda Síochána investigation into the means and circumstances of the Foran family and the degree of dependency of Kate Foran on her son John at the time of the latter's death; reference to John Foran's brother Patrick also serving with the National Army and reference to John Foran's father and two other surviving brothers.
