Subject Information File relates to Thomas Ruane's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the period between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917. File also relates to Thomas Ruane's receipt of payments under the Army Pensions Acts in relation to wounds received and disability arising from blast / bomb explosion in fighting against National Army Forces at Glenamoy, County Mayo on [15 September] 1922 during the Civil War - see also MSP34REF34790 Annie Kelly. Thomas Ruane claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from late 1916. From 1917 to [1920] he served as an Irish Volunteer Company and Battalion Officer Commanding. He became O. C. of the North Mayo Brigade IRA following that units formation in the wake of the subdivision of Mayo into four brigade areas in [1920]. Heavily involved in the organisation and development of the Irish Volunteers in County Mayo from 1917 onwards, in March 1918 he was arrested and imprisoned until June of that year. During that year he also claims to have been involved with Fintan Murphy and Richard Walsh in [unsuccessful] attempts to make contact with a German submarine allegedly expected to land arms on Kid Island off the coast of north west Mayo. During 1920 he claims participation in a number of IRA attacks and operations in Ballina, Cloghans, Ballyglass, Bellmullet and Corrick in County Mayo as well as the attack on Enniscrone Coastguard in County Sligo. He was arrested/captured in [November] 1920 and interned until December 1921. Following his release Thomas Ruane re-joined the IRA as a Brigade Training Officer. Following the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 Ruane took part in the anti-Treaty IRA take over of Colloney, County Sligo and later in attacks and operations against National Forces in County Mayo at Ballina, Balladerrig and at Glenamoy during September of that year. He also claims to have served as a member of the IRA Executive [Council] during the Civil War. In February 1923 he was captured but escaped from Galway jail after about 10 days imprisonment. He states that he was again arrested in Ballina in July 1923 but once more managed to escape. Ruane states that when he finally returned home in September 1924 he was again arrested but released after being held for about a week.
