Subject Information File relates to the killing of National Army Brigadier Sean Hales TD on 6 December 1922 during the Civil War. According to material on file a claim form in relation to Sean Hales was sent to Mrs Hales, Knocknacurra, Bandon in November 1923, however this form is not on file. Similarly although a letter of 5 March 1924 - see below - also refers to a claim in respect of Sean Hales there is no evidence on file of a claim ever being made under the Army Pensions Acts. Brigadier Sean Hales TD was found to be dead on arrival at Jervis Street Hospital, Dublin on 6 December 1922 following his shooting that same day outside the Ormond Hotel, Ormond Quay, Dublin. Patrick O'Malley TD was also wounded in the same incident. File includes: signed typed covering note dated 11 December 1922 from the Chief State Solicitor's Department to the Adjutant General forwarding a typed copy of the report to the Minister of Home Affairs on the Inquest on Sean Hales held on 8 December 1922 and also enclosing copy typed report dated 7 December 1922 from Dublin Metropolitan Police Station Sergeant John Redmond, Bridewell Station, Dublin regarding the shooting of Sean Hales and Padraig O'Maille (Patrick O'Malley) and typed copy witness statements from Constable Cunningham 110D, John Hickey P.C. 127D, Patrick J. O'Malley, Ormond Hotel and John Kennedy, 48 Capel Street, Dublin; signed handwritten letter of 9 December 1922 from Captain Sean O'Donovan to the Adjutant General requesting direction on the working and organisation of 3 Cork Brigade [National Army]; typed copy letter of 19 December 1922 from the Deputy Adjutant General to Commandant General Ennis, South West Cork Command, Bandon in reply to communication from Ennis of 14 December - not on file - advising Commandant General Ennis "... to assure your friend Mr. William Hales ... that there is not the slightest room for doubt as to what particular party are responsible for the death of Brigadier Hales ... [and to] get in touch with the other victim - Padraig O Maille, TD - who is in a position to give such information as will satisfy him in the matter, I presume"; and typed copy unsigned letter of 5 March 1924 addressed to the Secretary, President's Office, Upper Merrion Street, Dublin replying to letter reference R.A.2812 of 3 March 1924 - not on file - from the recipient and stating that the writer has forwarded that letter to the Secretary, Ministry of Defence as he understands that a claim to be made in respect of the death of Sean Hales under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 is to receive special treatment.
