Subject Information File relates to Sarah Healy's receipt of a partial dependents’ gratuity of £50 (fifty pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her son National Army Captain Thomas Henry Healy. Captain Thomas Healy was killed in an engagement with Irregulars (anti-Treaty IRA) at Glenamoy, County Mayo on 16 September 1922 during the Civil War. According to Sarah Healy, the Irregulars were under the command of "General [Michael] Kilroy so called" and five other members of the National Army were also killed in this engagement following which the surviving members of the National Army party surrendered to Kilroy. File includes: handwritten statements and letters signed and submitted by Sarah Healy in support of her application; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence and letters (28 February - 4 April 1924) involving the Defence Forces Office of the Adjutant General, Office of the General Officer Commanding, Athlone Command, Office of the General Officer Commanding, Claremorris Command and the Ministry of Defence, Army Pensions Department, regarding Thomas Healy's rank and the date and circumstances of his death; material relating to the Garda Síochána investigation into the circumstances and means of the Healy family and the degree of dependency of Sarah Healy on her son at the time of his death; original signed typed and copy typed correspondence of 15 September - 20 October 1924 between Paul Banim, President's Office and the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding representations made to President W. T. Cosgrave regarding the gratuity awarded to Sarah Healy and Paul Banim's personal knowledge of Thomas Healy; and material relating to Sarah Healy's unsuccessful attempts to have the gratuity awarded to her increased.
