Subject Information |
File relates to Thomas Power's unsuccessful application for a service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claims for service between 1 April 1917 to September 1923 with the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Republican Army.
States he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917 and was involved in arm raids, worked in a munitions factory (Knockard) and states he was in charge of dispatches and arms dumps. Claims he took part in attack on Emly R.I.C. Barracks, armed with a shot gun. Used the shot gun in attacks on four (4) R.I.C. at Emly Station. He also claims he came under fire at Lackelly, while guarding the column, and exchanged shots. Took part in the attack with a column at Drumcummin. During the Civil War, he claims he exchanged fire against the Free State Army at Glenbane. Claims he was 'on the run' for the whole period.
Initial decision of the Referee asserts that Power was not a person to whom the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 applied.
Applicant gave oral evidence on appeal but no change was recommended. Claimant was called again on 12 March 1954.
File contains: application form for service pension filled in and dated 14 May 1935; typed sworn statement made before the Advisory Committee on 21 September 1938; handwritten and typed copy letters supporting the claimant's application; copy order delivered in the High Court dated 15 September 1943 in which it is stated that the Prosecutor (Power) was not given an opportunity to give evidence or to call witnesses; also contains handwritten and typed sworn evidence given by the claimant, but also by Mr Finnan, P.Quish, and S.O.Maoileoin (10 May 1945 - 31 May 1945); petition submitted by the claimant to the Referee (October 1951)
File 34SP13588 contains application for Service (1917-1921) Medal (medal issued 21 May 1948); material relating to the claimant's appeal;
