File relates to Mary Coughlan's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £75 (seventy pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1927 in respect of her son National Army Private Daniel Coughlan. Mary Coughlan had also applied under the Army Pensions Act, 1923, however, as her son had died from natural causes, her application was unsuccessful.
Private Daniel Coughlan died on 20 December 1922 at Bandon Military Hospital, Bandon, County Cork from tuberculosis.
File includes: handwritten letters and statements signed and submitted by Mary Coughlan in support of her applications; material relating to Garda Síochána investigations into the circumstances and means of the Coughlan family and the degree of dependency of Mary Coughlan on her son at the time of his death; signed typed report of 17 December 1927 from the Office of the Officer Commanding Cork District to the Officer in charge Administration, General Headquarters regarding Mary Ann Coughlan's claim and her son's IRA and National Army service and death and enclosing typed copy undated statement from former Captain Con. Fitzpatrick regarding Daniel Coughlan and his mother's claim; signed typed standard report of 31 January 1928 from Defence Forces Adjutant General Major General M. Brennan to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the Daniel Coughlan's service and death.
