Subject Information File relates to Bridget Conway's receipt of a dependents’ gratuity of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 and a dependents’ allowance under the Army Pensions Act, 1953 in respect of her son National Army Private Raphael Conway. File also relates to Michael Conway's unsuccessful application for an award under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his brother Raphael Conway. According to the file Private Raphael Conway was killed in a mine explosion near Macroom, County Cork on 16 September 1922 during the Civil War. Raphael Conway also served with the IRA prior to joining the National Army - location of this explosion is given as Carrigaphooka (Carrigaphooca) and Clonfadda. File includes: typed copy of 21 September 1922 signed by P. Murtagh, Clerk of Athlone District Council of resolution unanimously passed by the Urban District Council of Athlone on 20 September 1922 expressing the councillors sympathy with he Conway family on the death of Raphael Conway; signed standard report dated 18 December 1923 from the Defence Forces Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private Ralph (sic) Conway's death; material relating to Garda Síochána investigation into the circumstances and means of the Conway family and the degree of dependency of Bridget Conway on her son at the time of his death; signed statements regarding Raphael Conway's pre truce IRA service from T.
