Subject Information File relates to Andrew Considine's receipt of a dependents’ gratuity of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of his son National Forces Lieutenant Michael Considine. File also relates to Catherine Considine's receipt of a dependents’ allowance under the Army Pensions Act, 1953 in respect of her brother Michael Considine. Lieutenant Michael Considine died on 26 September 1922 having been wounded in an engagement with Irregulars (IRA) at Lickeen, Kilfenora, County Clare during the Civil War. The exact date of this engagement is unclear from the material on the file as although Andrew Considine and the Defence Forces both give Michael Considine's death of date as the 26 August 1922 his death certificate states 26 September 1922. Although serving with the National Forces Michael Considine was not a fully attested member of the National Army at the time of his death. Michael Considine served with the IRA as a Company Captain prior to serving with the National Forces. File includes: handwritten statements and letters signed and submitted by Andrew and Catherine Considine in support of their respective applications; signed standard report of 15 January 1924 from Defence Forces Adjutant General Lieutenant General Gearóid O'Suilleavain to the Ministry of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Michael Considine's death; signed typed report of 26 March 1925 from the Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department confirming that Michael Considine was not an attested member of the National Army; material relating to Garda Síochána investigations into the circumstances and means of the Considine family and the degree of dependency of Andrew Considine on his son at the time of Michael Considine's death in relation to Andrew Considine's application; material relating to social welfare investigations into the circumstances and means of Catherine Considine in relation to her application and receipt of payments under the Army Pensions Act, 1953; signed handwritten statements regarding Michael Considine's pre -Truce IRA service in relation to Catherine Considine's application from Sean MacConmara, Patrick O'Loughlin, T. Collins, Andrew O'Donoghue and Joseph Barrett; original handwritten and typed and copy typed material relating to Department of Defence investigation into the accuracy of the reporting and recording of Catherine Considine's means and discussions as to what effect if any this should have on her receipt of the allowance awarded to her; and material relating to the settlement and closure of Catherine Considine's allowance account following her death on 17 August 1973.
