Subject Information File relates to Johanna Roche’s receipt of a Gratuity of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her son National Army Private Cornelius Roche. Private Cornelius Roche was killed on 16 August 1922 at Woodrooff (Woodroofe), County Tipperary during the Civil War. File also relates to an unsuccessful further application by Johanna Roche under the Army Pensions Act, 1927 and to unsuccessful applications from Elizabeth, Edith and Ellen (Angela) Roche, sisters of Cornelius Roche, under the Army Pensions Acts. Sean MacEoin TD, Minister for Defence recommended the award of an allowance to Edith Roche under Section 4(1) (c) (ii) of the Army Pensions Act, 1953 – see letter of 21 March 1955 from W. H. Cashman, Secretary, Department of Defence to the Secretary, Department of Finance. However the Minister for Finance refused to give his approval – see letter of 20 March 1957 from the Secretary, Department of Finance to the Secretary, Department of Defence. File includes: material relating to the payment of a Dependants Allowance to Johanna Roche by the Dependents Section, Army Pay Corps, Quartermaster General’s Department; material (1923-1963) relating to Garda Síochána and social welfare investigations into the circumstances and means of the Roche family at the time of their various applications, and the degree of dependency of Johanna, Edith and Elizabeth Roche on Cornelius Roche at the time of his death; signed typed report of 22 July 1924 from the Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private Cornelius Roche’s death; signed handwritten statements regarding Cornelius Roche’s service from John Nagle, Ned McGrath, Sean Fitzpatrick and William Dempsey in respect of the applications from Edith and Elizabeth Roche under the Army Pensions Act, 1953; handwritten and typed internal Department of Defence memoranda, notes and correspondence regarding the applications of Edith and Elizabeth Roche; representations from M.J.
