Subject Information File relates to Robert Aylward’s unsuccessful application for compensation and Bartholomew Aylward’s unsuccessful application for a dependants allowance or gratuity under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of their brother John Aylward. National Army Private John Aylward died on 6 December 1922 from wounds received by him on the previous 24 November in an IRA attack at Bigerin, New Ross, County Wexford during the Civil War. File includes: material relating to John Aylward’s National Army service record; reference to previous British Army and IRA and service; typed copy report dated 11 December 1922 from the Chief State Solicitor’s Department to the Minister of Home Affairs regarding the inquest on Pte. John Aylward held at Richmond Hospital, Dublin on 8 October 1922; and typed letter/report of 4 January 1924 from the Defence Forces Office of the Adjutant General to the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private John Aylward’s death.
