Subject Information |
File relates to Annie Allen’s receipt of a Partial Dependants’ Gratuity of £40 (forty pounds sterling) in respect of her son National Army Private Ernest Allen. Ernest Allen died on 10 December 1922 as a result of wounds received by him from an accidental shooting on 8 December 1922 at the Cookhouse, Dublin City Hall National Army Post. As Annie Allen died before final payment of this gratuity, payment was made to her husband Joseph Allen, father of Ernest Allen.
According to Annie Allen her son had also been a member of the IRA prior to joining the National Army. However there are no details of IRA units or activities on file. Annie Allen and other sources on file states that she has/had two other sons, William and George, with National Army service.
File includes: typed signed letter of 13 December 1922 from the Chief State Solicitor’s Department to the Adjutant General (National Army) enclosing typed copy minute from Chief State Solicitor’s Department to the Minister for Home Affairs summarising the evidence and result of the inquest on the body of Private Ernest Allen at Mercer’s Hospital, Dublin on 11 December 1922; material, including report from the Garda Síochána relating to the investigation of the level of dependency of Annie Allen on her son prior to his death; material relating to Annie Allen’s claim to a Dependants Allowance relating to her sons’ serving with the National Army; and reference to the eight other surviving children of Annie and Joseph Allen.
