File relates to Michael O'Dea's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces for part or all of the periods between 1 April 1916 and 30 September 1923. Material also relates to gratuity received by Michael O'Dea in respect of wounds incurred while fighting against British forces in Dublin during the 1916 Easter Rising.
Michael O'Dea claims membership of the Irish Volunteers and Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) from 1914. Wounded on 27 April 1916 O'Dea was hospitalised and incapacitated for some time afterwards but evaded arrest/capture. From [September] 1917 to February 1922 O'Dea served with the East Clare Brigade Irish Volunteers and IRA as a drill instructor, Company Lieutenant, Company Captain, Battalion Vice Commandant and Commandant. During the War of Independence Michael O' Dea took part in IRA attacks on British forces at Tulla [12 July 1920], New Grove [1 August 1920], Shraheen Bridge [17 August 1920], Glenwood [January 1921], Mountshannon [February 1921] and Kilrush [23 April 1921] as well as mobilising for other aborted/attempted IRA attacks in counties Clare and Galway.
Michael O'Dea joined the National Army on 22 February 1922 and served throughout the subsequent Civil War. He was wounded on 22 August 1922 at Moy and Miltown, County Clare during an attack by Irregular (anti-Treaty IRA) forces. He was discharged from the Defence Forces on 7 March 1924.
