Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. Michael O'Hanlon claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from 1918. In [summer] 1920 during the War of Independence Michael O'Hanlon took part in the burning of Forkhill RIC Barracks, County Armagh and an unsuccessful attempt to destroy a British munitions train at Adavoyle [County Armagh]. In January 1921 he took part in IRA attacks/ambushes at Camlough and Cullyhanna and in March of that year became an IRA General Headquarters Staff Captain undertaking organisational work in County Cavan. This work continued during the Truce period and in early 1922 he joined the GHQ Evacuation Department participating in the takeover of Barracks etc. from British military forces. In March/April 1922 he returned to the 4 Northern Division IRA as a Divisional Intelligence Officer taking part in a number of attacks against British and Northern Ireland Government forces at Camlough and Mullaghbawn (dates not on file) as well as serving as part of the neutral IRA force under the command of Frank Aiken in Dundalk, County Louth prior to and at the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922. Captured by National Army forces following their occupation of Dundalk in July 1922 he escaped and then took part in the subsequent IRA capture of Dundalk that same month. From then until his capture in October 1922 O'Hanlon took part in IRA activities and attacks in counties Cavan and Monaghan.
