File relates to Martin Coen's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the periods between 23 and 29 April 1916 and with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 31 March 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods.
Following the Easter Rising he was not interned. States he re-joined the Irish Volunteers upon reorganisation and took part in the usual activities. During the War of Independence says that he assisted in blocking roads at Moyvilla and Loughgeorge. States that in July 1920 he was involved in the capture of British forces at Athenry Station. Also states that he blocked roads for the Headford attack in May 1921. In June 1921 he was involved in the burning of the Pavilion, Athenry. During the Truce period (12 July 1921 - 30 June 1922) mentions that he went to Castlegar training camp. Claims that in May 1922 he was appointed Captain. States that he took part in blocking roads during the burning of Monevea Barracks.
