Subject Information File relates to Joseph Whelan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Citizen Army for part of the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917 and with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Following the Easter Rising he was interned until [June] 1916. States he joined A Company, Irish Volunteers in 1917 and carried out the usual activities. During the War of Independence claims that he took part in armed patrols and was arrested in November 1920. States that he was released in December 1921. Took no further part thereafter. File contains: typed transcript and summary of sworn evidence given by the claimant before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 (21 June 1938); handwritten notes of discussions held with Messrs Holohan and Hanratty; references from Oscar Traynor, Thomas J Dunne, Daniel Canny, Peter Carpenter, Christopher O'Reilly, Frederick Gordon, Peadar McNulty and Christopher [Toole]; material relating to payment of pension to niece.
