Subject Information File relates to Thomas McGrath’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and the National Army in the service periods between 01 April 1918 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce Period and Civil War. He unsuccessfully applied for service in the service periods from 01 April 1917 to 31 March 1918. McGrath was awarded eight (8) years service for pension purposes in 1926 at Grade D under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924. Thomas McGrath states that he joined B Company (O’Callagan’s Mills), 5 Battalion, East Clare Brigade, Irish Volunteers in 1917 under the command of Stephen Minogue. He claims that he was arrested on 01 March 1918 and imprisoned until 29 June 1919 under the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA). During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), Thomas McGrath was appointed Brigade Vice Commandant of East Clare Brigade, IRA in 1920 under the command of Austin Brennan (24SP11598) and joined the Brigade ‘Active Service Unit’ under the command of Michael Brennan (24SP9375). References state that he took part in an attack on Scarriff RIC Barracks (18 September 1920); attack on British forces at Sixmilebridge; ambush of British forces at Cratloe (13 January 1921); organising and taking part in ambush of British forces at Glenwood (after which his family home was destroyed in retaliation (20 January 1921); ambush of British forces in Mountshannon and ambush of British forces in Kilrush (April 1921). During the Truce period, Thomas McGrath was on the staff of the 1 Western Division IRA. Taking the pro Treaty side in the Civil War, the subject enlisted in the National Army at Ennis Barracks on 29 January 1922. There are no details of his Civil War service on file. He was a colonel in the Defence Forces at the time of his application in 1926. File includes completed reference forms in support of the subject’s claim from Major General Michael Brennan (1926) and Colonel Austin Brennan (1926).
