Subject Information File relates to Daniel Stapleton’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and the National Army in the service periods between 01 April 1918 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce Period and Civil War. Stapleton was awarded 7.25 years’ service for pension purposes in 1927 at Grade C under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924. Daniel Stapleton states that he joined the National Volunteers in 1914 in County Kilkenny and on an unspecified date transferred to the Irish Volunteers. Trained as a chemist, the subject states that he began manufacturing explosives from 1919 in a premises under his own shop and references state that he was appointed Company Chemist of A Company, 1 Battalion, Kilkenny Brigade, IRA in December 1920. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), Daniel Stapleton claims that he was able to import potassium chloride from Harker, Stagg and Morgan Limited, London to an address in Limerick; inventing his own particular explosive powder known in the South as “7B Powder”; giving instructions regarding the manufacture of explosives to IRA units in Hollyford [County Tipperary]; manufacture of buckshot; refilling and recapping used cartridges; procuring arms from Dr Brennan and his unnamed brother in Germany including one service rifle, one German sniping rifle, 520 rounds of .30 ammunition, 27 rounds of .45 ammunition, two .38 revolvers and four London police service revolvers which were delivered to 7 Battalion, Kilkenny Brigade by IRA Volunteer Rowan; manufacture of fulminate of mercury for filling detonators on instructions of Ernie O’Malley (34A6) and receiving burns to hand and body in premature explosion and being fired on by “Black and Tans” (RIC) at Killenaule [County Tipperary] and receiving gunshot wound to right buttock. Subject was Brigade Chemist, Kilkenny Brigade, IRA under the command of George O’Dwyer (24SP12814) in 1920-22 period and Temporary Divisional Medical Officer according to O’Dwyer. During the Truce period, Daniel Stapleton enlisted in National Army at Beggars Bush Barracks, Dublin in April 1922. Taking the pro Treaty side in the Civil War, there are no details of his service in this period on file. He was serving as Captain in the Supply and Ordnance Sub-Department, Island Bridge Barracks, Dublin in 1925 at the time of the application. Subject resigned from the Defence Forces on 15 July 1936 to take up a post with the Technical Bureau of An Garda Síochána as Garda Superintendent where he served until retirement in 1951. File includes filled out reference form in support of the subject’s claim from George O’Dwyer (1927); copies of Life Certificate forms; internal note that subject’s transfer from the Defence Forces to Technical Bureau of An Garda Síochána as Garda Superintendent on 16 July 1936 will result in the total suspension of his service pension (1936); correspondence with Office of Assessor for Public Departments (1946); correspondence with subject who requested payment of his service pension backdated from July 1936 to March 1945 which was denied (1948); correspondence with Department of Finance regarding subject’s pension with An Garda Síochána following his retirement (1951) and material relating to the payment of the balance of the service pension and a funeral grant to next of kin following subject’s death on 21 September 1968.
